The feeling is in the healing.
This seems to be the core idea of your work, can you elaborate?
In order for someone to understand this concept, one needs to acknowledge to oneself that something inside needs healing, that something doesn’t feel quite right. If there’s anything that makes my life uncomfortable, any fears that I have, any relationships that don’t work, all these are flags, clues that I’m experiencing a limited view of the world.
In moments of trauma we develop negative thoughts about ourselves and the world around us. We want to avoid revisiting the experience in the future because it feels uncomfortable and it gives us the sensation that we will relive it. Actually, what we want to avoid is feeling that guty feeling along with the associated thoughts.
So the old statement of tying heels is very relevant over time. After a traumatic experience we go through a lot of different phases, i.e. denial, anger, guilt, ultimately with the aim to reduce the amount of fear we hold around the experience, so that we are able to revisit it, process it and integrate it. Usually the amount of time needed is respective to the intensity of the experience per se. When we finally get to that point, all the related thoughts, feelings and sensations start to come up again on the surface, demanding in a sense their release.
After all, the body always tries to come back into balance, into peace, that’s its optimum state.
Rebirthing Breathwork is a technique that releases the trauma in the same way the body stores it: through the breath. Most of the time, in that moment of trauma we hold our breath, the emotional energy gets stored and we go into flight-or-fight mode, to a point where we say okay, I want to let go of this, I’ve held on to it for long enough, I want to be in balance.
The conscious cyclic breathing allows us to get in touch with the feeling and the thought associated with the trauma and to express it in a safe way, since we remain conscious while we’re breathing and we do it in a safe environment. As opposed to psycho pharmaceutical drugs which will just suppress the feeling even more or alcohol or cigarettes or any other kind of addiction which will just keep the feeling down longer.
This is why I enjoy rebirthing breathwork so much, because it’s using the natural mechanism of the body, it is gentle and it is how the body wants to let go. There’s nothing involved, other than my own conscious breathing that allows the thought and the feeling to come up. When that’s taken away, when I’ve let go of the emotional energy, my view of the world expands also. Suddenly I’m not so afraid to do this or that, to act or connect. It just gently broadens the horizons in myself.
